Asyst® Ships 100th; Spartan ® EFEM; Sees Continued Growth in Demand for Turn-Key Unified Tool Front-End Solutions

FREMONT, Calif., December 5, 2006 -- Asyst Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:ASYT), a leading provider of integrated automation solutions that enhance semiconductor and flat panel display manufacturing productivity, announced today that it has shipped its 100th Spartan EFEM (equipment front-end module). This milestone shipment represents the cumulative impact of more than 15 product design wins across a broad spectrum of OEM tool manufacturers and applications, including metrology, cleaning and strip.
Asyst has seen a steady rise in Spartan EFEM orders in recent quarters, as the Spartan EFEM's benefits have been validated by the marketplace. The Spartan EFEM uses the same core architecture as the proven, market-leading Spartan Sorter, which has been widely accepted with more than 200 units shipped to date.
The Spartan EFEM leverages the success of the Spartan Sorter and benefits customers with better than ISO Class 1 particle performance, high reliability for faster start-up times and high throughput for volume production. Customers achieve additional value from Asyst's outsourced manufacturing model that provides additional cost effectiveness and lower lead times for its customers.
"Over the past 18 months, the Spartan has been selected by nine OEMs for deployment on their new tools. This has led to a dramatic increase in Spartan EFEM shipments over the past six months, as these OEM customers are beginning to roll out volume production of these new tools," said Grant Imper, vice president, factory interface products, of Asyst. "OEMs increasingly are recognizing the Spartan's superior performance as a value-add to their tools and a positive selling point with end user customers. This, coupled with the Spartan's highly cost-effective design concept, is continuing to drive new design wins with major OEMs, which we believe positions the Spartan for continued success in the coming years."
